Topeka Capital Journal: KanCare expansion would help all Kansans
By Mike Oxford | March 25, 2019
Opponents of Medicaid expansion (known as KanCare in Kansas) continue to promote the false narrative that expansion would harm Kansans with disabilities. In trying to drive a wedge between expansion supporters and the disability community, they promote a false choice — that the state can afford either expansion or care for people with disabilities, but not both.
The truth is that a large proportion of those who would be covered by KanCare expansion have disabilities. But like tens of thousands of other Kansans, they fall into a cruel coverage gap in which they earn too much to be eligible for the current KanCare program but not enough to qualify for financial assistance to buy private insurance. By covering them, KanCare expansion is care for people with disabilities.
