Call for Artists: Healthy Kansas Community Engagement Art Project

January 31, 2025

The Alliance for a Healthy Kansas is seeking artists to participate in a traveling community art show that will visit up to five key community hubs across Kansas over the course of several months.

The selected artist will create a community engagement piece that will travel across the state. This show will serve as a powerful storytelling tool that reflects the impact of the health coverage gap in Kansas and bring attention to the urgent need for Medicaid expansion.

We are seeking an artist who personally experiences the challenges of the health coverage gap to share their story through this project. Your perspective will be central to raising awareness and sparking change!

About this project:

This art show is designed to be interactive, allowing community members to engage with the artwork and contribute to the piece in a meaningful way. The show will have a one-night-only event in each of the five locations, where visitors can witness the interactive artwork, participate in the creative process, and learn about the importance of affordable health care within Kansas.

The project should highlight the stories of Kansans who fall into the coverage gap and emphasize the importance of expanding Medicaid to provide affordable health coverage for all.

What We’Re Looking For:

We are seeking an artist who is in the health coverage gap and is passionate about using art as a tool for community engagement and social change. The ideal artist will be able to:

  • Design and create a piece of art that reflects the everyday reality for Kansans without access to affordable health care.
  • Create artwork in a medium that is suitable for public display, such as painting, sculpture, mixed media, or other innovative forms.
  • Work collaboratively with the Alliance for a Healthy Kansas and community partners during the creative process.
  • Travel to up to five communities across Kansas for the art show events (travel expenses will be reimbursed).
  • Willing to work with the Alliance on promotion, media coverage, storytelling, and other communications.
Compensation:

The selected artist will be paid $5,000 for both their time and the materials, and the artist will be reimbursed for travel expenses. The artist will be asked to sign a contract before payment is made.

How to Apply:

Please submit the following information to Masara Al-Sharieh by emailing Masara@ExpandKanCare.com:

  • A detailed one-page proposal outlining a potential artwork concept, including how you plan to incorporate the theme of Medicaid expansion and the health coverage gap, as well as community engagement.
  • Please include the type(s) of medium and space set-up requirements.
  • Samples of previous work that demonstrate your artistic ability and experience.
  • A timeline for completion of the work.
  • A short bio that includes your background and why you are passionate about this project.
Submission Deadline:

All applications must be received by February 28, 2025.

Proposals will be reviewed, and selected artists will be notified by mid-March 2025.
